Why Checking Your Brakes Before Roads Freeze Is A Very Good Idea

Posted on: 1 December 2018

Brakes are an essential part of driving safely on the roads. When those roads are also covered by snow and ice, it is even more important to have working brakes. Have your brakes checked by a qualified and licensed technician right before the first major winter storm is an excellent idea. Here are all the valid reasons why.

Your ABS System Only Works If It Is Fully Functional

Your car has an anti-lock braking system, or ABS. This system is ideal in winter because it prevents your car from sliding while you slow down and turn into the direction you want the car to go to avoid skidding off of the road. Sadly, not too many people understand how this works, and many more do not provide adequate maintenance to the ABS. A car brake service can check out your ABS system to make sure it is working optimally and prevent any accidents you might have otherwise had had your ABS gone out while on an icy winter road.

Your Brakes Can Prevent Accidents and Tragedies on Winter Roads

More people die on icy roads in winter than roads all the rest of the year. That is because their brakes were not applied, or the brakes were poorly applied and too late to prevent the accident. When you have had your brakes serviced prior to the first big snow storm of the year, then you (and they) are better equipped to be driving in nasty winter weather. You will be less likely to end up in an accident caused by your brakes (although there is no guarantee you will not end up in an accident caused by someone else's brakes).

If Your Brakes Need Replacing, It Is Better to Find out Now

It is far better to discover that your brakes need replacing when your vehicle is in the air in the auto body shop with the mechanic underneath it than it is to hear squealing, grinding, and scratching while trying to get the brakes to stop your vehicle on the icy roads. Your mechanic can replace them right away and have your car completely ready to handle anything this winter can dish out. Better still, your brakes will not need quite as much maintenance in the coming year. So, the added expense of replacing the brakes now reduces the overall expense of maintenance later (at least for the first year, anyway).
