Repair The Front, Side Panel Of Your Convertible If It Was Dented And Contains Chipped Paint

Posted on: 3 May 2016

If you accidentally drove into a golf cart that was parked in your driveway and the front, side panel of your convertible has a minor dent and chipped paint as a result, remove signs of damage by completing the repair steps listed below. After you have finished, your car's body will be restored to its original condition.

Materials

  • hand plunger
  • water hose
  • rubber mallet
  • electric sander
  • sandpaper
  • automotive detergent
  • sponge
  • painter's tape
  • touch up primer pen
  • bottle of touch up paint
  • rubbing compound
  • buffing cloth

Remove The Dent And Sand The Body

Dampen a hand plunger's suction cup with water and place it directly over the dent. Press the handle toward's the car's body until the suction cup is attached. Pull the handle towards yourself. Repeat the steps until the dent is no longer visible. If the dent is in an area that you can be reached from the vehicle body's underside, you can also use a mallet to tap out the damaged section.

Use an electric sander that has a sheet of low grit sandpaper attached to it to sand any portions of the convertible's body that contain chipped paint. Once flecks of paint stop chipping off, use a piece of fine sandpaper to sand the same area.

Clean And Prime The Area That Was Sanded

Clean the area that was sanded with soapy water and a sponge. Rinse the same spot with plain water and wait for it to dry. Cover portions of the body that surround the area that is being primed and painted with strips of painter's tape so that they are not exposed to either product.

Vigorously shake a touch-up primer pen to mix the contents inside of it. Press the tip of the pen firmly against the car's body until the primer is emitted. Move the pen in straight lines along portions of the body that are missing primer and paint. If too much primer is added to any spots, remove it with a damp sponge. Wait for the primer to dry.

Paint And Buff Parts Of The Panel

Purchase a bottle of touch up paint from an automotive supply shop that matches the original color of your car. Shake the paint until it is mixed. Use the applicator that came with your purchase to apply an even coat of paint over the primed sections. Wait for the paint to dry for several hours and add a second coat.

Once the second coat has dried, apply a few drops of rubbing compound that is designed for automobiles to a buffing cloth. Move the cloth over the fresh paint with small circles. Wipe away excess compound. The rubbing compound will blend the new paint with rest of the paint on the car's body. Your car will be damage-free and will no longer show any signs of being involved in an accident.
