Is Your Vehicle Rusty? Here's What To Do

Posted on: 29 September 2015

If you have an older vehicle -- or even a newer vehicle that has been exposed to the elements -- then you might find yourself worrying about rust. Rusty spots don't just look bad; they can also put the vehicle at risk of more damage. Luckily, there are steps that you can take to repair your car and get it back to normal after rust has appeared.

Use Sandpaper

If the rusty spots on your car are minor, and if you catch them soon enough, you can attack them yourself with fine-grit sandpaper. Simply purchase sandpaper from a home improvement store or an auto parts store, and use it to gently smooth away the rust. You can also use the sandpaper to carefully get rid of any chipped paint around the rusty spot. Then, you can proceed with painting the car to protect it from additional damage.

Have it Sandblasted

If you start sanding at your vehicle's rust and find that you aren't having much luck, or if the rusty spots on your vehicle are too large or too far gone to realistically get rid of them in this manner, then you should consider sandblasting. Sandblasting will get rid of any rust on your car and will also blast away the old paint so that you can have a fresh start. You can rent or purchase a sandblasting machine, or you can take your car to a body shop (such as Powder Coating Specialties) to have the job done.

Give it a New Coat of Paint

Your car's paint job isn't just there to make it look pretty, even though you might agree that your car looked a lot better before the paint was damaged and started chipping away. Paint is also designed to help protect your car from the elements and will help keep rust at bay. You can attempt to paint your car yourself; just make sure that you start with a coat of primer first and that you use a paint that is designed to be used on cars to ensure that it looks good and lasts. A better solution can be to take your car to an auto body shop for repair instead, however, since this job is a bit more difficult to get right than many people think.

Don't ignore the rust on your car, since it will only get worse with time. Instead, follow these tips to get rid of it.
